How to Spot a Liar

Honesty has very important role in entrepreneurship. Being honest with your business partners, your customers, team members and especially with yourself, will save you a lot of headaches, misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations. Constant dishonesty can (and eventually will) destroy your company.

Establishing and maintaining honest business relationships is crucial for every entrepreneur’s success. It is very important to know how to spot a liar in order to protect the future of your startup, because entrepreneurship is not a joke. Here you can find three very simple ways to spot a liar. They are very useful but you shouldn’t forget that we are all humans and we all make mistakes.

Look for non-verbal signs

The body language of your interlocutor says many important things that the words can hide. Be aware of the signals that the body language of your interlocutor gives you. Very important is to learn how to spot a fake smile. Remember, the honest smile shows itself in the eyes, not just on the lips.

Watch out for verbal signs like fast responses

When we communicate with a dishonest person, it often seems like the way they talk is very well-rehearsed. If the answers that they give you don’t match your questions, it can be strong sign that the answers have been rehearsed and that the person is feeling uncomfortable with the fact that they have to “exit the plot”.

Notice unusual behaviour

This is one very easy to spot sign of a lie, especially when you communicate with a person whom you know very well. Unusual speech tone and word choices, mimics and general behaviours can be very strong clues and will definitely help you spot a liar if you manage to notice them.

Surround yourself with honest people who can be trusted and you will have one less thing to worry about along your entrepreneurial path.
