Bulgarian Startup Culture

Startup Istanbul, Region’s leading startup, investment and entrepreneurship event will bring entrepreneurs, founders, VCs, investors, top executives, decision makers and startups together on the 30th of September. Register from here.

The Startup Ecosystem has been changing in Bulgaria. The biggest change is the seeing of global project potentials. There were a lot of local opportunities years ago in Bulgaria but now everything that is being built is thinking global and want to expand all over the world. Also the rising of the accelerators is making a big impact.

”Bulgaria is a market actually looking at regional or global opportunities, because Bulgarian market is so small and the crises hit the market very negatively. ” said Lubomir Lekov, the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the internet media company investor, BG AD, at Startup Turkey. It seems nobody is interested in local projects in Bulgaria now. For example Kratos Technology which is an E-government SaaS platform and Wr1st which is a wearable bracelet that enables cashless payments, from Bulgaria, they are both global projects. They also will be join mentorship and training program at Startup Istanbul Conference.

What makes Bulgaria unique as an ecosystem

The young generation is very different now in Bulgaria, especially after European Union Agreement, the students started to travel much more and get a chance to see global opportunities.  ”IT specialization is one of the most prestigious jobs in Bulgaria now, we have really talented IT specialists” says Lekov.

Bulgaria also is a very strong player in software and IT business. This is one of the reason why the country has a potential. Do you know there is a private software university in Bulgaria which is focusing just that skill? People are also very hard working like in Turkey.

We’ll see some of them in Istanbul at the end of this month and get a chance to discuss more about Bulgarian Startups. Let’s meet on the 30 of September at Startup Istanbul.
