Learning from the Ancients - Philosophers and Their Teaching Methods
I want to go back to some of the early philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates because learning back then was very different than today. In America now, classrooms are like little factories with the teacher up front and students sitting in rows. But the Greeks, Romans and other ancient societies learned in circles, talking amongst each other. That's the kind of learning environment I want to design. The stoics solved big problems by thinking deeply and discussing together. Marcus Aurelius didn't just tell people what to do, he engaged in meaningful dialogue. I'm inspired by Maria Montessori's approach of helping students teach and guide each other. And by the stoics using philosophy and peer-to-peer learning to tackle life's biggest questions. This video explores what we can learn from ancient philosophers and their collaborative, discussion-based teaching methods. Their wisdom and learning formats from 2,000+ years ago still have so much to offer education today!
